Redefining traditional elegance with a modish twist

At this year’s Sindoor Khela during Durga Puja celebrations, Bollywood heartthrob Rani Mukerji reminded us that style isn’t just worn; it’s told. She wore a stunning ivory drape with a classic red border and draped it in Bengali style. But what stood out was the addition of a glossy Prada key, which was attached to her pallu and carried a serene, powerful, and nostalgic essence. It was a reference to the Bengali custom where women are often seen carrying keys on their pallu, which soon became a mic-drop moment. But this isn’t the only time when Bollywood actresses have added something big and international to their classic drapes.

Alia Bhatt

Alia Bhatt made quite the splash at her Cannes debut, as the diva wore a dreamy Gucci ensemble that was inspired by an Indian saree. She made heads turn in a customised outfit by the brand, which was a high-fashion gown inspired by our traditional six yards of grace. The shimmering outfit covered in embroidered Swarovski crystals had Gucci’s signature monogram and looked like a fusion between traditional Indian wear and an alluring full-length gown.

Janhvi Kapoor

Janhvi wore a stunning gown customised by the label Miu Miu, which looked no less than a saree drape and came with the traditional six yards of pleats with a pallu. Crafted on an ivory base with delicate polka-dotted accents, her fit carried both ease and a sculptural strength. The one-shoulder pleat brought the right amount of drama, whereas the cinched waistline emphasised her side curves and blurred the design boundaries.

Kangana Ranaut

Controversial queen and fashion icon Kangana Ranaut was spotted at the airport in a stunning pastel green-hued chiffon saree, which featured gold and silver borders on either side. She teamed it with a matching yet elegant princess-cut blouse and subtle pearl jewellery. But what stood out in the moment was her statement, a brown-hued classic Hermès Birkin bag worth Rs 11 lakh. Where most divas choose to carry a traditional potli bag or a clutch with their saree look, Kangana did not once shy away from showcasing her style prowess, and we loved every inch of it.

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja

For designer Jean Paul Gaultier’s last showcase, Sonam Kapoor wore a stunning black Gaultier saree with a statement white tuxedo. The all-black tailored saree with a collared tuxedo carried an understated Parisian touch, which sat perfectly with Sonam’s personality. Adding a personal touch to this passionate look, she wore a statement rustic silver and pearl necklace by Amrapali and recreated her memorable Cannes 2011 moment.

Priyanka Chopra

For a gala in New York, Priyanka Chopra wore a saree-inspired gown by Elie Saab, which was dipped in cobalt blue and came with intricate threadwork. The mermaid-style skirt with pleated tulle overlay cleverly mimicked a saree drape, whereas the one-shoulder pleated detailing looked like a sleek pallu attached to her corset-fitted body. She completed the look with a silver statement clutch and indeed made roars on international grounds.
