A hidden gem of Indian handloom

The textile industry of India is one of the richest in the world, where every region and culture contributes a unique weaving tradition that carries its own history and significance. While the world knows textiles like Banarasis and Kanjeevarams, several lesser-known textiles continue to thrive in local weaving and require your attention. One such lesser-known pick is the Lalitpur zari silk saree, which comes from the region of Bundelkhand.

Know its origin and more

Lalitpur lies in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, known for its historic temples, forts, and ancient craft traditions. This city sits at the intersection of the states Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Local weaving communities have preserved this unique technique for years, passing it down through artisan families. Its sarees are known for their rich zari work and fabric durability.

But what makes these sarees unique?

The defining feature of these sarees is their combination of metallic zari with silk fabric detailing. The fine silk base gives the drapes a soft and structured finish, whereas the traditional zari motifs are neatly woven around the border and pallu. The patterns are inspired by nature, regional architecture, and temple patterns present in the area, whereas the colour palette used here is mostly gold and silver, which highlights the zari detailing.

Know the traditional weaving process

Creating these sarees involves intensive labour steps. It starts with silk yarn preparation, which includes cleaning the raw silk threads, dyeing them, and winding them onto spools. This is followed by design planning, where motifs and patterns are mapped before weaving begins. Next comes the loom setup, where artisans prepare the handloom with weft and warp threads. The zari weaving with metallic threads is next carefully inserted, forming borders and motifs. Lastly, everything is finished and polished, with each piece taking several days to complete.

But why is it less known?

Despite its craftsmanship, Lalitpur’s weave remains under the radar because of its limited marketing compared to major textile hubs, small weaving clusters, lack of national exposure, and the mass-produced machine-made competition. But, in the age of fast fashion, consumers are now interested in sustainable fashion, slow craftsmanship, and regional textiles, which may help the craft see a better future.
