Carjacker shot in leg by Delhi Police after trying to snatch pistol

A 26-year-old carjacker was shot in the leg by a police officer after he allegedly tried to snatch his pistol during a chase in outer Delhi's Baba Haridass Nagar area, officials said.

The incident began on May 27 when a PCR call was received at PS Baba Haridass Nagar reporting that "two boys robbed the car after beating him." When the enquiry officer reached the spot, the caller was not found.

Shortly after, another PCR call was received stating that "the carjacker has been shot in the leg."

Police reached RTRM Hospital where the injured accused, identified as Aakash (26), was found undergoing treatment. Complainant Arun Kumar (26), whose car was allegedly looted, and PCR vehicle in-charge ASI Narender Singh were also present at the hospital.

The complainant alleged that Aakash and an associate looted his car. He then joined the PCR in searching for the vehicle and spotted it. When the PCR chased the car, the accused stopped due to a narrow lane and tried to flee on foot.

According to police, the PCR in-charge warned the driver to stop. Instead, the accused moved towards the officer and attempted to snatch his pistol. In self-defence, the officer shot him in the leg.

A case has been registered under sections 221, 132, 309(6), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Further investigation is underway.

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket explodes on launch pad at Cape Canaveral

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded while on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida, during a hotfire test on Thursday, US media reported.

"We experienced an anomaly during today's hotfire test," the company said in a brief statement posted on X, adding that "all personnel have been accounted for."

Video from the incident shows smoke emerging from beneath the rocket before it fully combusts into a massive fireball. No injuries were reported.

Florida congressman Mike Haridopolos, whose district includes Cape Canaveral, said in a statement on X that he has been in contact with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman regarding the explosion.

"I am grateful there were no reported injuries and thankful for the first responders, engineers, and launch crews who acted quickly," Haridopolos said.

Romania says Russian drone hit building in its territory

A Russian drone struck an apartment building in NATO-member Romania, its defence ministry said on Friday, wounding two people in a city near the Ukrainian border.

"During the night of May 28-29, the Russian Federation resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania," the Romanian defence ministry said.

"One of these drones entered Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar as far as the southern part of the city of Galati, and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building, with the impact triggering a fire," it said.

The emergency services said two people with abrasions required medical treatment and that the fire had been extinguished.

Drone incursions have been detected dozens of times since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine in 2022, but the latest incident was the first time one had hit a residential building.

Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after the drones were detected in Romanian airspace, the defence ministry said.

A nationwide air raid alert had also been issued in neighbouring Ukraine overnight in anticipation of Russian strikes, though it was lifted in the morning.

Rescue teams are attempting to reach four climbers who fell on Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, after an accident near Denali Pass at an altitude of about 18,200 feet, US officials said.

The four were part of a seven-member climbing team. Three other climbers assisted the injured before returning to a high camp around 17,000 feet and contacting park authorities.

The National Park Service said poor weather, including low visibility and cloud cover, had delayed helicopter rescue efforts. “Helicopter operations will start when a weather window opens up,” park spokesperson Scott Carr said.

Mount McKinley, North America’s tallest peak, rises to about 20,310 feet.

Canada seeks ‘true partnership’ with US ahead of trade pact review: Carney

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday called for a renewed economic partnership with the US ahead of a key review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) expected in July.

Speaking in New York, Carney said Canada wanted a “true partnership” with Washington while also expanding trade ties beyond the US to strengthen its “strategic autonomy”.

“Our core objective across these partnerships is to increase our strategic autonomy. Because we live in a world where integration has been weaponised,” Carney said.

He also stressed the importance of integrated North American supply chains in sectors including energy, automobiles and critical minerals, while warning that uncertainty around tariffs and trade policy was affecting investment.
