CBSE OSM row reaches Parliament panel as affected student briefs committee on alleged flaws

The controversy surrounding CBSE’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system reached the parliamentary standing committee on education, with student activist Sarthak Sidhant appearing before the panel to present concerns over the evaluation process and the alleged irregularities in the award of the OSM contract.

Sidhant, who has been vocal about issues linked to the digital marking system used in Class 12 board examinations, arrived at the Parliament House Annexe to make a presentation before the committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, headed by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh. During the meeting, he outlined what he described as flaws in the OSM contract and explained the problems allegedly faced by students due to the system.

The parliamentary panel is currently examining the implementation of the On-Screen Marking system in CBSE examinations and reviewing complaints related to its functioning. The scrutiny comes amid growing concerns over the evaluation process, with the Education Ministry having earlier sought a detailed report from CBSE on the OSM tender process.

Atishi targets Dharmendra Pradhan over CBSE re-evaluation portal glitches

Delhi leader of opposition and AAP MLA Atishi criticised Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan after the CBSE reportedly faced difficulties in relaunching its re-evaluation portal for students seeking verification and reassessment of their class 10 and 12 board exam results.

In a post on X, Atishi wrote, “Another day… Another achievement of Dharmendra Pradhan. Now, CBSE is not able to relaunch its re-evaluation portal. And even now the PM doesn’t think Dharmendra Pradhan should be dismissed as Education Minister!”

The remarks come amid complaints from students and parents over technical issues affecting access to the CBSE re-evaluation process. The board had recently revised its post-result grievance redressal mechanism, under which students are required to first obtain photocopies of their evaluated answer sheets before applying for verification of marks or re-evaluation.

However, the process has been hit by portal-related disruptions, prompting criticism from opposition leaders and concerns among candidates awaiting reassessment of their results.

6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes off Italy

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Italy's southern Calabria region early Tuesday, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported.

The quake occurred at 00:12 a.m. local time Tuesday (2212 GMT on Monday), with its epicenter located at a depth of about 250 kilometers, the institute said.

The epicenter was located in the sea off the coast of the southern Calabria region.

Tremors were felt in several southern Italian regions, including Calabria, Sicily, Campania and Puglia, Xinhua news agency reported quoting local media.

No casualties or major damage have been reported so far. Local authorities are monitoring the situation.

Earlier in March, a strong, incredibly deep 375-to-381 km depth earthquake struck directly off the coast of Naples. This was noted by geophysicists as the strongest deep-earth fracture in that specific sector in a decade, sending pressure waves upward through the area's volcanic plumbing systems.
