Father’s Day is popularly commemorated on the third Sunday of June every year in many countries. It's a time for children, young and old, to express their love, gratitude, and respect for their fathers and father figures, acknowledging the vital role they play in shaping families and society.

Origin

The origins of Father's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. The idea of celebrating fathers came about in response to the already established Mother's Day. The first known Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

Dodd's campaign and third Sunday

Dodd’s campaign for Father’s Day gained momentum, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national day to honour fathers. However, it wasn’t until 1966 that the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Father’s Day holds profound significance as it serves as a reminder of the indispensable role fathers play in the lives of their children and families. It underscores the values of fatherhood and the positive impact fathers have on their children’s emotional and psychological well-being.

Spread of globalisation

The spread of globalisation has brought these days and celebrations to countries like India, too. Another major day, when fathers are honoured in many countries with Catholic populations, is March 19 or Saint Joseph’s Day.

Celebrations across the world

In many countries, including India, US, the UK, and Canada, it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. However, other countries observe it on different dates. Australia and New Zealand celebrate it on the first Sunday in September, while in Thailand, it coincides with the birthday of the King, December 5th.
