Growing terror as water surged

Jaya, a 44-year-old woman, remembers the day her husband was fishing at sea when the waves struck. “The boys were playing near the shore, and I could see people gathering, staring at the waves. At first, no one understood what was happening. The water turned dark, and waves started rising higher and higher,” she said, describing the growing terror as the water surged.

A desperate rush for higher ground

Yusuf Ansari, now a 32-year-old rickshaw driver, was playing cricket on a beach when the tsunami hit. “Out of nowhere, we saw a boat tossed by the waves, followed by a massive rush of dark water and a big wave of water. It all happened so fast. Everyone around panicked. They didn’t even think about their boats or homes,” Ansari said, recounting the chaotic scene and the desperate rush for higher ground.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Fisherman Kuppi Ratnam expressed concerns about eroding coastal defenses. “The stones don’t hold up any more, and the sand keeps washing away,” Ratnam said, highlighting the ongoing need for infrastructure maintenance.

He added that while the government provided housing, many couldn’t afford to rebuild or return to the coast. Fishermen plan to commemorate the anniversary with a minute of silence, offerings of milk and flowers, and prayers. The tsunami’s impact continues to affect the lives of survivors 20 years after the catastrophic event.
