A fire at a nursing home in Sri Lanka's western Anguruwatota town has killed 12 residents and injured eight others, police said on Thursday.

The blaze broke out late on Wednesday, prompting a rescue operation in which 51 residents were evacuated.

Authorities have arrested the home's director on suspicion of causing deaths through negligence. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
