5 stunning purple coloured animals that seem to be painted by artists

Purple is one among the rarely occurring colours in the world, it is often seen as a representation of regal, rarity, and beauty. Unlike typical greens and browns, purple and violet stand out on the land, in the air, and beneath the sea, marking a select group of plants and animals with an added dash of drama.

And while one would rarely expect to see a purple coloured creature, nature indeed hides some beautiful marvels in the colour purple.

Here are some of the most striking purple-hued animals

2/6

Purple sea star

The purple sea star is a familiar creature that is found along Pacific coastlines. Measuring 10 to 25 centimeters across, these stars usually have five thick arms and come in shades from deep purple to orange, yellow, or brown. Their colours may depend on diet and habitat. As an important species, they play a critical role in maintaining the health and balance of tidepools by preying on mussels and other invertebrates.

3/6

Purple honeycreeper

The purple honeycreeper is a stunning resident of South America’s rainforests. The male shows a unique violet-blue plumage, while the female is green for camouflage among the foliage. These little birds belong to the tanager family and are known for their lively, active nature. Their colourful appearance helps males attract mates, and their fine, curved bills are perfect for sipping nectar from flowers.

4/6

Purple emperor

The lesser purple emperor butterfly, found in woodlands of Europe, is best known for the male’s glossy, purple sheen. This iridescence shines most brilliantly when sunlight hits the wings. Females, meanwhile, are larger and more subdued in colour, usually having brown hues. These butterflies spend much of their lives high in the treetops, coming down only occasionally to feed or lay eggs.

5/6

Violet ground beetle

The violet ground beetle is an attractive insect easily recognised by its black body edged with a metallic purple sheen. These beetles are strong, nocturnal predators that hunt smaller insects on the forest floor or in gardens. The two closely related species, Carabus violaceus and Carabus problematicus, are nearly identical. Their beautiful, glossy colours help them blend into the dark and damp habitats they prefer.

6/6

Violet-backed starling

The violet-backed starling is a bird native to sub-Saharan Africa, often seen at the edges of forests and savannas. Males show off vibrant, iridescent purple feathers to catch the attention of potential mates, while females are more camouflaged with brown and white plumage. In groups, their dazzling appearance lights up the trees, adding a splash of colour to the African landscape.
