5 of the largest birds in the world

In a time when viral videos of rare wildlife moments capture millions of views within hours, animals that stand out for their sheer size often steal the spotlight. While we usually think of birds as creatures of the sky– flying, and chirping through the air– some of the most fascinating ones don’t fit that image. These birds don’t fly – they walk the ground with size and strength.

From Africa’s plains to South America’s forests and Australia’s open lands, some bird species have grown unusually large. Some can’t fly, while others can only fly short distances. Each of them plays an important role in their environment. These aren’t just big birds– they show how nature adapts. Here are five of the world’s largest birds, each unique in its own way.

2/6

Ostrich

The ostrich is the biggest and heaviest bird in the world. Found in Africa, it can grow as tall as 9 feet and weigh over 150 kg. Even though it can't fly, the ostrich is a very fast runner, reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h, making it the fastest bird on land. Its strong legs help it run and also act as a way to protect itself. Ostriches also lay the biggest eggs of any bird.

3/6

Emu

The emu is the second-largest bird in the world and is native to Australia. It can grow over 5 feet tall and weigh around 45 kg. Like the ostrich, the emu can’t fly, but it’s a strong runner with lots of stamina. It lives in many parts of Australia, from forests to open plains. One interesting fact is that male emus take care of the eggs and raise the chicks until they’re old enough to be on their own.

4/6

Southern Cassowary

The southern cassowary is a big, colorful bird with a bright blue neck and a hard, helmet-like bump on its head. It lives in the rainforests of northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and nearby islands. It can grow up to 6 feet tall and weigh about 60 kg. Cassowaries are shy, but they can be dangerous if they feel scared. They have strong legs and sharp claws, which they use to protect themselves, even from people if needed.

5/6

Rhea

The rhea is a big bird from the grasslands of South America. It can’t fly, but it runs fast and moves quickly. It usually grows to about 4 feet tall and weighs around 20 to 25 kg. Rheas are mostly found in places like Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, and they often stay in groups. One interesting thing about them is that the male builds the nest and takes care of the babies, keeping them safe while they grow.

6/6

Kori Bustard

The kori bustard, found in eastern and southern Africa, is the heaviest bird that can fly. Males can weigh over 18 kg, but they don’t fly much– they mostly walk through dry grasslands. These birds are shy and usually stay alone. They eat insects, small reptiles, and seeds. When they do fly, it’s usually just to get away from danger.
