The Secretary Bird

The Secretary bird is a bird that hunts snakes. It is found in Africa. Is known for its unique way of hunting. The Secretary Bird does not fly to catch its food. Instead, it walks on the ground. Its legs are very strong. Are covered in thick scales. These scales protect the bird from snake bites. When the Secretary Bird finds a snake, it kicks it fast. The kick is so strong that it can kill the snake. The bird can kick the snake in 15 milliseconds. This is very fast.

Herons


Not all birds that hunt snakes are experts. Some birds, like owls and herons, will eat snakes if they get the chance. Owls are very quiet. Can sneak up on snakes at night.

Herons are very fast. Can catch snakes in the water. They use their beaks to catch the snakes.

Serpent Eagles

There are birds called Serpent Eagles that are found in Asia and Africa. These birds are very good at hunting snakes. They sit in trees. Wait for snakes to come out. The Serpent Eagles have talons that can crush a snakes spine. They also have feathers on their chest that protect them from snake bites.

In North America there is a bird called the Roadrunner. It is known for being very fast. The Roadrunner hunts snakes in the desert. It uses its wings to distract the snake. Then catches it with its beak. Sometimes two Roadrunners will hunt a snake together. One bird will distract the snake while the other bird catches it.

How these birds survive after consuming snakes


One thing about birds that eat snakes is that they are not always affected by the snakes' venom. Some birds have features that protect them from venom. Some birds have feathers that keep the venom from getting to their skin. Other birds have chemicals in their bodies that make the venom not work.
