Like ‘Goodachari’, these four spy-thrillers in Telugu will amaze you

Adivi Sesh’s coming-of-age spy thriller ‘Goodachari’ that released last Friday has been doing wonders at the box-office. The film made on a shoe-string budget of Rs 4 crore has reportedly raked in Rs 10.2 crore from the Telugu states over the weekend. It has already reached the half-million mark in the USA within four days of its release.

Despite not boarding any A-list names or a mammoth budget, this Sashi Kiran directorial is majorly working because of its riveting tale; gritty and smart work by the entire team, and of course, the genre. Though Telugu cinema is not accustomed to spy thrillers very often, new-age directors are coming up with intriguing storylines and engaging screenplay to make the audience hooked to the screens.

Here we give you a rundown of four spy-thrillers in Tollywood that you certainly shouldn’t miss.

2/5

‘Spyder’ (2017)

The crazy combo of AR Murugadoss and Mahesh Babu came together for the 2017-released ‘Spyder’ which featured SJ Surya as the main antagonist. The big-budget film showed how an intelligence officer saves the city from a serial killer who is on the loose for major human destruction.

Despite being a debacle at the ticket windows, ‘Spyder’ garnered notable acclaim for the lead performances, mind-boggling visual effects, thundering BGM, and Santosh Sivan’s brilliant cinematography. It’s surely a must-watch for a large-scale movie experience.

3/5

‘PSV Garuda Vega 126.18M’ (2017)

This Praveen Sattaru directorial is the biggest hit in the three-decade-long career of the 56-year-old veteran star Dr Rajasekhar. ‘PSV Garuda Vega’ keeps you on the edge throughout its 158-min runtime with riveting sequences one after the other.

Greatly assisted by a bunch of talented actors in supporting roles, the Rs 17-crore budget film owes its super success to the meticulous technical crew, especially the action team who proved Telugu cinema is very much capable in pulling off Hollywood-type action segments. The plot revolves around how an NIA (National Investigation Agency) officer identifies a burgeoning nuclear scam through periodical minor crimes.

4/5

Vishwaroopam’ (2013)

Despite going through frequent hurdles before release owing to religious sentiments, Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vishwaroopam’ had kept the cash registers ringing at the domestic box-office, particularly in the Telugu states and Tamil Nadu. The pulsating spy-thriller is packed with high-octane live action, enticing combat sequences, Hollywood-level technical prowess, and last but not the least, the ‘Universal Actor’ on-screen persona in several get-ups.

The story of ‘Vishwaroopam’ focuses on how a couple and their friends try to save New York from a terrorist threat. The movie is surely worth watching.

5/5

‘Anveshana’ (1985)

Though this Vamsy directorial released over three decades ago, the suspense element in the climax along with Ilaiyaraaja’s soothing numbers still makes the viewers glued to their TV screens whenever the film gets telecasted. ‘Anveshana’ stays true to its genre by maintaining an engrossing screenplay throughout the runtime and the impeccable performance by the cast keeps the viewer guessing on the serial killer till the very end. It is termed as a cult classic in Tollywood.
