SIIMA 2015 Nominations: Best Comedian

Soori (Jilla)
Soori graduates as a solo comedian in the film, after a series of group comedy. Though comedy is not the forte of this action-packed entertainer where two big-wigs Mohanlal and Vijay are head on fighting, Soori manages to tone down the heavy-duty melodrama and evoke some laughter. Though some of his comedy falls flat, there are some scenes where he manages to tickle the funny bone. The fact that he shared screen space with the Ilayathalapathy himself has made him much in demand.

Karunakaran (Yaamirukkey Bayamey)
Horror films seem to be the flavor of the season. But as far as Yaamirukka Bayamey is concerned, the film goes for more laughs than chills. And one of the prime reasons that keep the audience hooked is none other than Karunakaran, who plays actor Kreshna’s character’s friend in the spooky comedy. Sharath (Karunakaran) is both unsure and funny at the same time and every time we expect a supernatural reason behind his terrified look, we only get laughter. In short, it’s Karunakaran’s film all the way.

Kovai Sarala(Aranmanai)
It looks like Kovai Sarala is fast emerging as one of the favourites when it comes to horror films. The actress repeats her Kanchana act in Aranmanai and sends the audience into peals of laughter with her histrionics. Though the fulcrum of the story revolves around Hansika’s character, Kovai Sarala makes her presence felt as the wife of an amnesiac husband played by Manobala. The scene where she has to hand over the milk to a possessed Andrea is a scream. Since the movie doesn’t really send a chill down the spine, comedians rule the roost here and the veteran actress makes the most of it.

Thambi Ramaiah (Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam)
It goes without saying that Thambi Ramaiah is the show-stealer of this movie. The actor plays a veteran filmmaker who has devoted his entire life to cinema by aspiring to become a director, but hasn’t achieved anything. He along with the film’s protagonist and team are hoping to be part of the film industry some day. Thambi Ramaiah, who mentors the team, is struggling to put together a script and find a producer for their maiden venture. Playing a husband with two wives, the actor has the audience rolling with laughter with his body language and witty dialogues.

Vivekh (Velai Illa Pattadhari)
The tried and tested combo of Dhanush- Vivekh, who has had the audience in splits in films like Padikkadhavan and Uthamaputhiran, yet again tickle the funny bone in Velai Illa Pattadhari. Though Vivekh appears only in the second half of the film, he is a ruckus after that. Vivekh’s mere presence and body language is enough to evoke laughter. His combination with his assistant Murugan has the audience asking for more. Vivekh plays Dhanush’s companion as he climbs up the employment ladder.
