Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, one of the most influential directors in the history of Tamil cinema, has passed away at the age of 84. The celebrated director reportedly breathed his last at his Chennai residence in the early hours of Wednesday following age-related health complications. The Indian Express reports suggest that his health had been declining in recent months, particularly after the sudden demise of his son Manoj in 2025.Bharathiraja is widely credited with bringing realism and rural life to mainstream Tamil cinema.
