Bollywood's dramatic kite sequences

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam: The movie, based on Gujarati culture, shows the tradition of kite flying at its best. Kite flying, which is a sport generally enjoyed on Makar Sankranti (Uttaran in Gujarat), has been given a significant space in the movie. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has dedicated a song ‘Dheel de de re’ for the festival, where Salman Khan and other actors are seen celebrating the festival.

Kai Po Che: The title of the film has been picked up from a Gujarati phrase that means 'I have cut the kite.' The phrase is used when one of the competitors cuts off another competitor’s kite and then yells Kai Po Che! The movie, which is based on Chetan Bhagat’s 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life,' celebrates the triumph of friendship and the title is also a call of victory.

Fukrey: In the movie Fukrey, kite flying has been used very interestingly as the actor proposes the actress for friendship while flying a kite. In one of the songs, young boys send kites over to the girls' terraces with a message, 'Kya tu mujhse friendship karegi?' scribbled on it. There’s a love story brewing between Pulkit Samrat and Priya Anand through this sport.

Kites: Starring Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori, the movie Kites, directed by Anurag Basu, used kites as a metaphor for the star-crossed lovers who want to be free like kites. The movie didn’t work that well at the box-office, but kite, as a symbol, was at the centre of the plot.
