Desi Superheroes

Our idea of superheroes have very much been inspired from Hollywood. But did you know, Bollywood treated it's fans with certain unique superheroes with the desi element. While a few were unable to make a mark, some became massive hits wanting for more. While we keep gushing about how well made 'Krrish' and 'Bhavesh Joshi' were, let us look back at some more superheroes from the authentic Hindi cinema, portrayed by iconic filmstars.

2/10

Ajooba (1991)

Long before Krrish took over as the superhero of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan once played a superhero Ajooba in a black mask. Big B played the role of a prince in the 1991 film ‘Ajooba’ who is washed ashore and raised by a blacksmith. Apart from that, the superstar also returned to the big screen after a long hiatus.

3/10

Krrish (2006)

While there had been a few, India was yet to witness the rise of a completely homegrown superhero till Krrish came long with his black cape and mask. A sequel to 'Koi...Mil Gaya', 'Krrish' was the origin story and delved into how a boy-next-door Krishna finds out about his special powers.

4/10

Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018)

The story revolves around a young man who is determined to do the right thing and challenges anyone who resorts to illegal means. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the film stars Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor in the lead role.

5/10

Superman (1987)

With Puneet Issar essaying the role of our favourite superhero Superman, Bollywood blessed it's fans with Desi Superman ! It adapts the story created by DC comics and gives it an Indian twist.

6/10

A Flying Jatt (2016)

Remo D’Souza handed the mantle of this shy and timid superhero to Tiger Shroff to create a light-hearted family film. This movie was a fresh take on the dark and serious superhero movies with humour and love !

7/10

Shahenshah (1988)

The film that gave us the famous dialogue "Rishtey mein hum tumhare baap lagtey hai...naam hai Shahenshah" was one of the most amazing superhero films back then. Big B portrays the role of Vijay - a corrupt officer by day, but turns into a vigilante by night in order to make the city crime free.

8/10

Mr. X (2015)

Directed by Vikram Bhatt, the Emraan Hashmi starrer film seems to be hugely inspired from Mr. India, as this one too takes on the concept of invisibility.

9/10

Ra.One (2011)

Ra.One is one of the most popular superhero movies in Bollywood and rightly so. Shah Rukh himself playing the role of a superhero is the dream come true of millions of his fans. It was also one of the most expensive superhero movies ever made in India.

10/10

Drona (2008)

A story revolving around the concept of mystical energies, Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra have their heart and soul by playing the lead roles for the movie. The film also starred Jaya Bachchan in a pivotal character while Kay Kay Menon was the main villain.
