Juhi Chawla was first chosen to play Draupadi

Juhi Chawla, remembered for her memorable performances in ‘Darr’ and ‘Ishq’, was once selected to play the iconic role of Draupadi in ‘Mahabharat’. She had successfully cleared the screen test and even bagged the part in BR Chopra’s historic TV show. However, despite being finalised, she eventually had to step away from the opportunity. The casting decision was a significant moment because ‘Mahabharat’ was one of the biggest television productions of its time. Juhi’s selection showed how strongly she impressed Chopra even before her Bollywood breakthrough.

Family’s limited industry connections

In an old interview with Classic Radio Shrotasangh, Juhi shared that her family didn't really know anyone in the movie biz. One of the few they knew was director BR Chopra, who was always super nice to her. Juhi said she was really struck by how polite and classy he was. He even did her screen test himself and picked her 'cause of how she did, not just 'cause he knew her. That made the whole thing way more special for someone just starting out like her.

BR Chopra advised her to choose films over television

Juhi shared that after selecting her for Draupadi, BR Chopra told her to prioritise films when she signed ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. He advised her, “TV rehne do, if your film is getting made, work there,” showing his belief in her future as a film star. His guidance played a crucial role in shaping her early career. Juhi respected his advice and backed out of the show to pursue the movie. This decision ultimately changed the trajectory of her life and career.

A milestone debut for Juhi and Aamir Khan

In 1988, the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ introduced audiences to Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan. The movie told the story of young love, in its very emotional form, facing challenges connecting with families in an all too contemporary take on ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Directed by Mansoor Khan, its cultural impact was historic. It hit the charts with all six songs and sold nearly 10 million cassettes. It launched both Chawla and Khan to instant superstardom.

Roopa Ganguly eventually became the face of Draupadi

After Juhi Chawls left the project, Roopa Ganguly took the role of Draupadi. Her performance was stunning, with many still reminiscing her portrayal as one of the best ever on television. The show ‘Mahabharat’ directed by BR and Ravi Chopra became hugely popular in India. The impact of the show on the culture was huge and remains so. Roopa’s performance remains impressive to this day, but it’s fun to speculate how things would have turned out if Juhi Chawla had persisted with the show.
