Early life and breakthrough

Born in Bombay in 1926, Nalini Jaywant came from an educated family background. She was a cherub-faced angel who was noticed early, and by the age of 14, she was cast in 'Radhika' (1941). Soon after, she was cast in Mehboob Khan's 'Behen'; this was her proper indoctrination into film as a performer. By the late 1940s Nalini Jaywant shared the screen with talents like Balraj Sahni and Trilok Kapoor.

Rise to stardom in the 1950s

Nalini eventually became one of the highest-paid actresses of the 1950s thanks to her relaxed screen presence and expressive eyes, having experienced a high degree of success matched with superstar actors like Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, and Dilip Kumar.

Dilip Kumar’s praise

One of the greatest actors of Indian cinema, Dilip Kumar, said of Nalini Jaywant that she was the "greatest actress" he worked with during his lengthy film career. This comment came from one of India's best actors and noted the brilliance of Jaywant as an actress.

4/8

The Ashok Kumar era

Nalini did a wonderful job when she starred opposite Ashok Kumar. It would be nearly impossible to match the success of Nalini and Ashok Kumar's films as they did together. The sequence began with 'Samadhi' and 'Sangram' and included hit films such as 'Jalpari' (1952), 'Kafila' (1952), 'Nau Bahar' (1952), 'Lakeeren' (1954), and 'Naaz' (1954). Nalini Jaywant and Ashok Kumar did movies together until the late 1950s that included the films 'Mr. X,' 'Sheroo,' and 'Toofan Mein Pyar Kahan.' In 1959, Jaywant received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Raj Khosla's 'Kala Pani' with actor Dev Anand.

Marriage, affairs, and controversies

Nalini's private life was frequently the subject of excitement. The Hindustan Times reported that she had married filmmaker Virendra Desai as a teenager. She was soon estranged from her family and separated from Desai. Later, Nalini was romantically linked to Ashok Kumar, which allegedly culminated in a failed kidnapping in Nepal. She was also said to have had a rough relationship with her cousin, actress Shobhana Samarth, the grandmother of Kajol.

6/8

Decline and retirement

By the mid-1960s, Nalini had retired after 'Bombay Race Course' (1965). Nearly twenty years later, she returned briefly for Amitabh Bachchan's 'Nastik' (1983) in the role of his mother. She later expressed her not being satisfied with that role because it was not what it was made out to be, and it left her sad.

7/8

A lonely end

According to DNA, Nalini's last years were filled to the brim with seclusion, alcoholism, and regret over marriages that didn't work and being childless. She was estranged from family and colleagues, and it seemed like she lost herself completely outside of the public eye. In December 2010, Nalini's lifeless body was found three days after her death, highlighting the true solitude of her last chapter.

8/8

The forgotten luminary

Nalini Jaywant's path, from the brightest star in the 1950s to dying in relative obscurity, signifies the fragile nature of stardom. Although she has passed away, Nalini's talent, saluted in the past by such legends as Dilip Kumar, will always act as a reminder of the golden age of Indian cinema.
