As conversations around diversity and representation continue to shape the global entertainment landscape, Meghna Ghai Puri, has underlined the importance of inclusivity in storytelling, calling it essential to the future of cinema. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror exclusively, about the evolving role of films in society, at the Kashish Pride Film Festival, she emphasised that cinema remains one of the most influential mediums for reflecting social realities and fostering understanding among audiences.
Cinema as a mirror of society“Cinema has always been one of society's most powerful mirrors,” she said. “Its true strength lies in its ability to reflect diverse experiences, challenge perspectives, and foster inclusivity across communities.” According to her, as creative arts continue to evolve, inclusivity should not be viewed as a box-ticking exercise but as an opportunity to enrich storytelling. “As the creative arts continue to evolve, inclusivity must remain at the heart of storytelling, not as an obligation, but as an opportunity to create richer, more authentic narratives,” she added.
Celebrating diverse voices The educator and industry leader believes
Indian cinema reaches its fullest potential when it embraces a broad spectrum of stories and lived experiences.
“Indian cinema is at its best when it embraces a multitude of voices, identities, and lived experiences,” she said, highlighting the need for greater representation both on-screen and behind the scenes. At a time when audiences are increasingly seeking authentic narratives, Meghna stressed that diverse storytelling not only broadens perspectives but also strengthens the cultural fabric of cinema.
Applauding platforms that create spaceShe also praised initiatives such as KASHISH for providing a platform to stories and voices that are often underrepresented in mainstream discourse. “Platforms like KASHISH play a vital role in creating space for these stories, sparking meaningful conversations, and reminding us that representation matters,” she said Expressing her personal association with the movement, she added, “I am proud to serve on its advisory board and to be associated with this important movement that continues to champion diversity, acceptance, and the power of storytelling.” As the entertainment industry navigates changing audience expectations and emerging narratives, Ghai’s message is clear: meaningful representation is not merely a trend, but a fundamental ingredient in creating stories that resonate across generations and communities.
