Bollywood movies where we failed as an audience

1/7

Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009)

Directed by: Shimit Amin | Starring: Ranbir Kapoor
A grounded, feel-good story about ethics, ambition, and success without shortcuts — Rocket Singh flopped on release. Viewers weren’t ready for a subtle, slice-of-life business drama without glamorized action or romance. Today, it is hailed as one of the best "corporate" films made in Bollywood.

2/7

October (2018)

Directed by: Shoojit Sircar | Starring: Varun Dhawan
Many audiences were unprepared for the slow, meditative tone of October. It wasn’t a typical Varun Dhawan commercial entertainer. Instead, it was a soulful story about selfless love, grief, and humanity — themes that needed patience to absorb. Critics loved it, but a wider audience only started appreciating it after repeated TV and OTT runs.

3/7

Tamasha (2015)

Directed by: Imtiaz Ali | Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone
At the time of release, Tamasha left audiences divided. Many expected a light-hearted love story but were served a deeply philosophical film about identity and self-expression. Only later did people revisit it and realize how powerfully it captured the silent suffering of "fitting in" and the beauty of "finding oneself."

4/7

Swades (2004)

Directed by: Ashutosh Gowariker | Starring: Shah Rukh Khan
Swades is now celebrated as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s finest performances, but at the time of release, it underperformed at the box office. A quiet, introspective story about an NRI reconnecting with his roots didn’t excite a mass audience that was craving larger-than-life escapism. Only years later did people realize its emotional depth and social relevance.

5/7

Andhadhun (2018)

Directed by: Sriram Raghavan | Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu
Although Andhadhun eventually became a sleeper hit, when it first released, many were hesitant to engage with its unusual tone and layered narrative. It wasn’t your typical Bollywood thriller. It took word-of-mouth and critical acclaim to pull audiences in — a reminder that sometimes we are slow to recognize genius.

6/7

Lakshya (2004)

Directed by: Farhan Akhtar | Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta
Today, Lakshya is quoted as one of Hrithik’s most inspiring performances, especially among youth and army aspirants. But when it released, the movie failed to pull in large numbers. Audiences couldn’t immediately connect with its coming-of-age military narrative — only appreciating its emotional richness over time.

7/7

Rangoon (2017)

Directed by: Vishal Bhardwaj | Starring: Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor
Despite being a rich, visually stunning period drama, Rangoon tanked at the box office. Its unique storytelling, experimental narrative style, and mature love triangle didn’t click with audiences expecting a conventional war-romance movie.
