Devdas

Directed by: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit
Another adaptation of Sarat Chandra’s novel, Devdas is larger than life. While stylized and dramatized, it portrays Bengal’s zamindari culture, emotional expressiveness, and societal expectations. The grand sets, Bengali wedding rituals, and the tragic intensity all reflect the cultural richness of old Bengal, making it one of the most opulent tributes to the region in mainstream cinema.

2/5

Kahaani

Directed by: Sujoy Ghosh
Starring: Vidya Balan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Kahaani is one of the most iconic Bollywood thrillers set entirely in Kolkata. The city isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a living, breathing character. From the chaotic bylanes to the grandeur of Durga Puja, the film captures the soul of Kolkata. It presents a Bengali woman as strong, intelligent, and emotionally resilient, challenging stereotypes and celebrating feminine power in a deeply cultural context.

3/5

Lootera

Directed by: Vikramaditya Motwane
Starring: Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha
Set in rural Bengal in the early 1950s, Lootera is a quiet, poetic film that beautifully depicts the decline of the zamindari system. Its old-world visuals, Bengali mansion setting, and soft classical aesthetics highlight Bengal’s bygone aristocratic charm. The story, inspired by O. Henry’s The Last Leaf, also reflects the Bengali love for literature and visual storytelling.

4/5

Parineeta

Directed by: Pradeep Sarkar
Starring: Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt
Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, Parineeta is a cinematic ode to Bengal’s literary heritage. It’s rich in Bengali architecture, music (especially the use of Rabindra Sangeet), and traditional values. Set in 1960s Kolkata, the film highlights the city’s blend of modernity and tradition, celebrating its cultural refinement and emotional storytelling.

5/5

Piku

Directed by: Shoojit Sircar
Starring: Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan
Piku is a heartfelt slice-of-life story that explores Bengali family dynamics with warmth and humor. It takes the viewer from Delhi to Kolkata—ending in the city’s iconic old neighborhoods. The characters speak Bengali, eat Bengali food, and reflect the region’s intellectual and emotional depth. Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of a quirky Bengali father brings authenticity and love to the screen.
