Known as the ‘Tragedy Queen’ for More Than Just Her Roles

While Meena Kumari earned the title of Bollywood’s Tragedy Queen for her melancholic characters, her real life mirrored much of that sorrow. Behind the success and fame, she battled intense loneliness, depression, and emotional isolation, often saying that her life felt like an endless script of tragedy.

A Poet at Heart, Writing Under a Pseudonym

Beyond acting, Meena Kumari was an accomplished poet who penned deeply personal Urdu verses. She wrote under the pseudonym Naaz, expressing her heartbreak and inner battles through poetry. Many of her works were published posthumously, offering a glimpse into her inner world that fame had masked.

A Painful Marriage That Ended in Separation

Her marriage to filmmaker Kamal Amrohi was both professionally fruitful and personally damaging. Reportedly marked by control and neglect, the relationship slowly disintegrated. Despite her love for him, she endured restrictions and emotional distance, eventually leading to their separation, after which her descent into alcoholism accelerated.

Died Shortly After Her Career’s Biggest Film

Ironically, Meena Kumari passed away just weeks after the release of her career-defining film, Pakeezah. The movie, which had taken over a decade to complete due to her personal issues and marital separation, became a hit. Sadly, she did not live to witness the full extent of its success, succumbing to liver cirrhosis on March 31, 1972, at the age of just 39.

Alcohol Addiction Was Both Her Escape and Her End

In her final years, Meena Kumari’s health declined sharply due to chronic alcoholism, which she reportedly turned to as a coping mechanism for her loneliness and emotional pain. By the time 'Pakeezah' was released, her body was too fragile to recover, leading to her premature death in a Mumbai hospital.
