Here’s all you need to know about Jisshu Sengupta and his upcoming films in 2019

You can call him Bengali film industry’s Mr. Perfectionist. Jisshu Sengupta can go to any extent to get into the skin of a character. Like any other actor in Tollywood, he has also faced a lot of ups and downs. But time has taught him the ultimate lesson. Jisshu has now become an actor who prefers quality over quantity and that in turn ensures there is always huge excitement about his films. With Srijit’s ‘Ek Je Chhilo Raja’ along with ‘Ghawre And Bairey’ and ‘Shonar Pahar’, Jisshu enjoyed perhaps the most successful year in 2018 and now it’s over to 2019! Here’s a lowdown at Jisshu Sengupta’s upcoming film in 2019.

Bornoporichoy

What if Bengal's two biggest heartthrobs right now appear in the same frame that too in an intense thriller! According to industry sources, chances are really high of Bengali cinema’s two most desired men Jisshu Sengupta and Abir Chatterjee sharing the screen space in Mainak Bhaumik's upcoming thriller. According to industry sources, Jisshu will be seen in a shady role while Abir plays a clean, tidy Bengali man of honour. Mainak has promised there will be loads of action scenes for which a Bollywood stunt director has been hired.

Ghawre Baire Aaj

Aparna Sen is all geared up for her directorial return to Bengali cinema. Produced by SVF, her next venture is a modern day take on Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Ghawre Bairey’. While Anirban Bhattacharya will be seen as Nikhilesh, Jisshu Sengupta will essay the character of Sandip. In 1984 these two roles were supremely enacted by Victor Banerjee and Soumitra Chatterjee respectively in Satyajit Ray’s screen adaptation of the same novel. Young actress Tuhina Das has been cast as Brinda, a modern take on the character Bimala which was played by Swatilekha Sengupta in the Ray classic. Tuhina was earlier seen in Arindam Sil’s ‘Aschhe Abar Shabor’. Anjan Dutt will be seen as Mastarmoshai, which was earlier played by Manoj Mitra in Ray’s film. Tagore’s ‘Ghawre Bairey’ is all about the love triangle of Nikhilesh, his wife Bimala and his friend Sandip. When Bimala realises the complex emotions of her relationship with Sandip, it marks her growth as a person.

Mukhomukhi

In Kamaleshwar Mukherjee’s upcoming ‘Mukhomukhi’ Jisshu and young actress Darshana Banik play a dysfunctional couple. Jisshu plays a depressed musician Sounak working with an ad agency who fails to convince his creative pursuits to everyone. Being a self-obsessed intellectual Sounak is a loyal yet confused husband. Darshana will be seen as Sounak’s wife Anusuya who is keen to get a job and an identity. As a devoted and dependent woman Anusuya is a loyal critic of her husband’s work but calls intellectualism pretence. Life takes a shocking turn when Sounak and Anusuya get separated due to some complex adjustment disorders. What happens next forms the crux of the film.

5/8

Mahalaya

‘Gulab Gang’ director Soumik Sen is ready to tickle up the Bengali nostalgia we all love. Sen’s next film is based on Bengal's famous Durga Puja tradition – ‘Mahalaya’. The plot of this movie is all about the controversial change in Mahalaya on the radio in 1976 as Uttam Kumar replaced legendary Birendra Krishna Bhadra. Jisshu Sengupta will portray Uttam Kumar on the celluloid, while Subhamoy Chatterjee will play Pankaj Mullick and Subhashish Mukherjee to be seen as Birendra Krishna Bhadra. ‘Mahalaya’ will also witness Prosenjit Chatterjee as a producer who is believed to be playing an important character in the upcoming Bengali drama.

6/8

Manikarnika The Queen of Jhansi

The focus will surely be on Kangana Ranaut’s character Rani Laxmibai in ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’, but her journey is incomplete without her close ones and those who helped in the freedom uprising. One of these characters is her husband and Maharaja of Jhansi Gangadhar Rao which is played by Jisshu. The first look poster of Gangadhar Rao was recently released and Jisshu’s appearance in front of the throne is quite impressive with the turban, the sword and the rings, earrings, chains and the moustache. Historical references say Manikarnika was only 14 when she was married to Gangadhar Rao. After her marriage Manikarnika’s name was changed to Laxmibai. Gangadhar and Manikarnika were married only briefly as the king breathed his last in 1853.

7/8

NTR biopic

The dashing actor is all set to mark his foray into Telugu cinema with the upcoming biopic on actor-turned-politician Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao aka NTR. The Bengali heartthrob will share the screen space with a group of acclaimed actors like Nandamuri Balakrishna, Vidya Balan, and Rana Daggubati in pivotal roles. Jisshu will play the character of filmmaker L V Prasad who launched a number of actors in Telugu cinema. Telugu actor and NTR’s son Balakrishna will essay the title role in the biopic, while Vidya Balan plays NTR’s wife Basavatarakam and Rana Daggubati will be seen as Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.

8/8

Devidas Thakur

While Jishhu Sengupta’s performance as the Bhawal prince in ‘Ek Je Chhilo Raja’ has earned him accolades, the versatile actor is also a key part of Mahesh Manjrekar’s upcoming Bollywood film ‘Devidas Thakur’. Apart from Jisshu in a pivotal role, the film reportedly also stars Shruti Hassan, Prateik Babbar and many others. The Manjrekar movie is all about the story of underworld and the prolific actor is set to play the role of Naseeruddin Shah’s elder son.
