Trichy: The public works department (PWD) has initiated steps to redevelop the dilapidated Gandarvakottai Government Hospital (GH) in Pudukottai district, a day after a representation seeking the state government’s intervention was submitted to chief minister Joseph Vijay by MDMK principal secretary and Trichy MP Durai Vaiko.
The redevelopment proposal, which had remained pending for several years, was initially estimated at Rs 10 crore. However, Durai Vaiko has urged officials to increase the allocation, citing the long delay and the need for improved infrastructure.
After inspecting the hospital on Saturday, the MP said the existing proposal required modifications. “Officials showed me the redevelopment plan for Gandarvakottai GH. Suggestions and changes have been made. New buildings must be constructed and basic amenities upgraded, for which additional funds are essential,” he said.
Officials proposed using one of the existing buildings within the hospital campus as a temporary facility while dilapidated structures are demolished and rebuilt. However, the MP suggested identifying a more suitable facility nearby to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services during the construction period.
Thanking the chief minister for the swift response to the demand, Durai Vaiko said redevelopment work would commence soon. He added that he would continue to follow up with the PWD and health department to improve healthcare infrastructure at the hospital.
