Electric two-wheeler sales sees jump in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad amid fuel price concerns
Pune: Pune has recorded a sharp rise in electric two-wheeler adoption this year, with 13,124 vehicles registered between Jan and May, according to data from the Vahan database. The figure is up 24% from 10,853 registrations during the same period in 2025.
Automobile dealers attributed the growth to rising fuel costs and increasing consumer confidence in electric mobility.
“There has been nearly a 30% rise in enquiries for electric two-wheelers. The EV two-wheelers which we market on a retail basis are sold out,” said Nicky Sehgal, a dealer in Pune.
“The trend is not limited to two-wheelers but passenger cars as well,” he added.
Electric two-wheeler registrations in the city have crossed the 3,000-unit mark per month since March. “This level of monthly sales is typically seen during the festive season,” said another dealer.
In comparison, monthly electric two-wheeler registrations averaged around 2,100 units earlier. In Pimpri Chinchwad, too, electric two-wheeler registrations rose to 5,764 units between Jan and May, compared to 5,166 units during the same period last year.
Dealers said the electric two-wheeler segment is witnessing a revival as consumers become increasingly concerned about rising fuel price and long queues at petrol pumps.
“Most established brands have entered the electric two-wheeler market and stabilised supply chains, giving commuters greater confidence in performance and after-sales service. This has also resulted in higher driving ranges, making electric two-wheelers suitable for buyers in both urban and rural areas,” a dealer said.
Sachin Mahajan, Maharashtra president of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), said there has been a 30-35% increase in enquiries for electric vehicles. “The share of EVs in total vehicle sales in the state has increased to 16-17% in 2026, compared to 7-8% in 2024,” he said.
“The govt is aiming for 30% EV penetration in the state by 2030. Buyers in rural areas are also becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of owning an electric vehicle. These advantages are beginning to outweigh those offered by vehicles running on conventional fuels,” Mahajan added.
Across Maharashtra, about 1.1 lakh electric two-wheelers were registered between Jan and May this year, compared to 83,858 units during the corresponding period last year, the data showed.
