BIJNOR: A woman and her daughter-in-law were admitted to hospital in critical condition after they allegedly attempted suicide following a prolonged domestic dispute in Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district on Wednesday, police said.
According to Circle Officer (Dhampur) Anjani Kumar Chaturvedi, the incident took place in Gallakhedi village under the Syohara police station limits.
Mithlesh (50), wife of Antar Singh, and her daughter-in-law Deepanshi (30), wife of Abhikant Yadav, had been involved in frequent arguments over the past few days. The situation allegedly escalated on Wednesday when Deepanshi allegedly poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire during the dispute. Around the same time, Mithlesh allegedly consumed a poisonous substance, police said.
Family members and locals rushed the two women to hospital. Deepanshi was referred to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital for treatment, while Mithlesh was admitted to a higher medical centre in Bijnor. Both are reported to be in serious condition.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and are recording statements of family members.
Further inquiry is underway, officials said.
