Former Rajya Sabha members Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati expresses disappointment over use of Shivaji Maharaj’s name for political benefits
Kolhapur: Former Rajya Sabha member Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati on Saturday expressed concern over the political use of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy, saying it was “regrettable” that his name was being invoked for political gain.
He said Shivaji Maharaj was an inspiration not only to the masses but also to leaders like Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Phule, warning against dividing such a universally revered figure. “He represented all communities, including the traditional 18 pagad and 12 balutedari systems (the traditional, hereditary socio-economic system of rural Maharashtra). Why are we dragging him into politics?” he asked, while speaking at Raigad Fort after performing traditional rituals marking the 352nd anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation. Sambhajiraje was accompanied by his wife Sanyogitaraje Chhatrapati, son Yashraje Chhatrapati and MLA Rohit Pawar, among others.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation took place on June 6, 1674, at Raigad Fort.
At least 10 lakh people from across Maharashtra and beyond gathered at the fort to pay tribute to the Maratha king. Security arrangements included around 150 officers, 1,600 police personnel, traffic police teams, the State Reserve Police Force, riot control units, local rescue teams and volunteers, ensuring peaceful celebrations. Cultural performances, including traditional powadas by shaheers, Mardani Khel demonstrations and dhol beats, along with chants of “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ki Jai” and “Jai Bhawani, Jai Shivaji,” energised the gathering.
Addressing the attendees, Sambhajiraje cautioned against the growing spread of caste-based politics. "Villages are increasingly divided into rival political groups, often leading to tensions. In some cases, statues of Shivaji Maharaj are installed at sensitive locations, followed by conflicts that end up defaming his legacy. He is a universal icon and I hope the youth reflect on this and avoid caste-based politics,” he said.
Meanwhile, at Kolhapur’s New Palace, the royal family marked the occasion with a ‘Suvarna Mudra Abhishek’. A performance by the Maratha Light Infantry band was also held.
