DHARWAD: DC Darpan Jain said journalism is not a profession but a mission and those engaged in it should understand that they have social commitment.
Inaugurating the symposium on `Media and social responsibility' at Anjuman College here on Monday, he said newspapers and electronic media played an important role in disseminating information and forming public opinion in a democracy.

Jain called upon the journalists to discharge their duty without fear or favour.
Delivering a special lecture on the topic, journalist Ramzan Dargah said newspapers and electronic media should support the cause of social justice. He said journalists did not have extra-constitutional rights and were no different from other members of the society. "Media should know their rights and duties and lay more emphasis on discharging their duty," he said.
President of Media Club Ganesh Kadam, Principal M F Doddamani, Professor Nagaraj Halliyavar, assistant director of Information P S Hiremath and R Maruti spoke. Laxmikant Bilgi proposed a vote of thanks.
Dharwad Media Club, department of Information and Karnatak University's department of mass communication and journalism had jointly organized the symposium.
