Hubballi traders seek HDMC action for rainwater drainage issues and cleanliness
Hubballi: Hubballi has been receiving continuous rain for the past few days, leading to waterlogging at key junctions, overflowing drains and slushy stretches near commercial hubs, disrupting daily movement and affecting business. With more rain forecast and intermittent heavy spells, locals are looking towards the HDMC to address their problems immediately and restore normalcy.
Traders in busy market areas are reporting reduced footfall and delays in loading and unloading due to stagnant water and clogged drains. In some areas, rainwater mixed with silt and waste is entering shopfronts, damaging goods and creating unhygienic environment.
Pedestrians are finding it difficult to navigate broken footpaths and water-filled potholes, while two-wheeler riders are facing a higher risk of skidding. Auto-rickshaws and buses are also being forced to take diversions, adding to congestion and increasing travel time.
GK Adappagoudar, president, Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged HDMC to take up immediate desilting of drains, removal of plastic and debris from stormwater inlets and clearing of choke points where water is backing up. Attention is also sought for low-lying pockets where rainwater routinely accumulates, indicating the need for temporary pumping arrangements and quick repairs to damaged drain covers. He also called for round-the-clock monitoring and rescue teams during peak rainfall hours, so that blockages can be cleared as soon as they occur.
Gurunath Ullikashi, social activist, raised concerns over sanitation and health risks, and requested coordinated action between HDMC, electricity and traffic departments to ensure safe movement, proper lighting in flooded areas and timely barricading of dangerous spots.
