Khodang becomes first Kuki-Zo village resettled after May 2023 conflict
Churachandpur: Khodang, a Kuki Zo village in the buffer zone bordering Churachandpur, Kakching and Bishnupur districts, was officially resettled on Thursday, becoming the first Kuki-Zo village to see residents return after displacement due to the conflict that began on May 3, 2023.
Saikot MLA Paolenlal inaugurated the resettlement by cutting a ribbon at a commemoration stone, followed by a dedication prayer led by pastor Zalal.
The village was deserted on May 28, 2023, when an armed Meitei group allegedly attacked the village, forcing residents to flee and leave behind their belongings, villagers said.
Out of over 40 households, most were torched, with around eight houses spared. The village remained completely deserted for about three years, locals said.
Village chief Jamminlien Haokip said the resettlement was made possible through initiatives by MLA Paolenlal, the district administration, the concerned SDO, civil society organisation leaders and the village authority.
Around 40 houses have been reconstructed, with about 10 more houses yet to be built under the PMAY scheme, Haokip added.
“I am very happy as we could resettle from today because of the steps taken by district officials, CSOs, and the village chief. Now we will be able to pursue our normal livelihood activities,” Haokip said.
A formal inaugural function was held in the village with MLA Paolenlal attending as chief guest. Kuki civil society organisation leaders, student leaders, security forces, Kuki women leaders and leaders of various chiefs’ associations were also present.
