zawl: Efforts to form a new executive committee in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) gained momentum on Wednesday as BJP leaders met elected members at Kamalanagar-II to discuss establishing a council govt under the party’s leadership.
The meeting, convened by Chakma district BJP president Durya Dhan Chakma following directions from the party’s higher leadership, was attended by BJP MDCs and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) MDCs supporting the proposed arrangement. Discussions focused on constituting the executive committee, the council’s executive wing. Participants agreed that issues such as portfolio allocation and procedural formalities will be finalised by BJP’s district and state leadership in Aizawl.
Addressing the gathering, Durya Dhan Chakma urged MDCs to remain united and work collectively to ensure stable governance. He stressed the need to prioritise public welfare, development initiatives, and solutions to the council’s administrative and financial challenges.
The meeting comes amid major political changes following the recent CADC elections. Although the ZPM emerged as the single largest party in the 20-member council, subsequent shifts in allegiance enabled the BJP and its allies to stake claim to form the executive committee. The political situation further evolved after the resignation of the previous executive committee headed by chief executive member Molin Kumar Chakma.
Governor’s Rule, imposed on July 7 last year by governor Gen. (retd) VK Singh and extended for another six months on January 7, is due to expire on July 7. The governor has cited political instability, frequent shifts in allegiance among MDCs, and a pending inquiry commission report on alleged corruption and maladministration.
