MCG wraps hazardous power poles in PVC shields ahead of monsoon

Gurgaon: As part of its monsoon preparedness measures, the MCG has begun covering hazardous electricity poles with PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) pipes across the city to reduce the risk of electrocution during the rainy season.

According to MCG officials, the exercise is being carried out across different zones, with priority being given to waterlogging-prone areas and locations where electrical safety concerns have previously been reported. The corporation has identified poles with exposed wires, damaged structures and other defects that could pose a danger to the public during rains.

Officials said surveys are underway across all zones to identify vulnerable poles, and field teams have been directed to complete the safety work before the onset of the monsoon. The concerned teams have been instructed to prioritise sensitive locations to ensure necessary safeguards are in place before heavy rainfall begins.

The initiative forms part of a broader monsoon preparedness plan being undertaken by the civic body. Alongside electrical safety measures, MCG is carrying out drain desilting, monitoring sewer networks and implementing steps to prevent waterlogging across the city.

MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said ensuring public safety during the monsoon remained a key priority for the corporation.

“Safety of residents during the monsoon is MCG’s top priority. With this objective, the Corporation is continuously working on various measures related to preventing waterlogging, cleaning of drains, monitoring of the sewer network and electrical safety. I have appealed to all residents to remain vigilant during the monsoon, immediately inform the concerned officials of any dangerous electricity pole or electrical risk, and provide their cooperation in ensuring public safety,” said Dahiya.

The civic body has also appealed to residents to report damaged or unsafe electricity poles in their localities so that corrective action can be taken promptly. Officials said public feedback would help identify potential hazards and prevent accidents during the rainy season.

According to officials, the campaign has been launched in the public interest to minimise accidents caused by electricity poles becoming live or by contact with exposed electrical components during rains. They added that citizen participation would play a crucial role in identifying risks and improving electrical safety across the city.
