Keri: The worsening water crisis and groundwater depletion in Goa are forcing birds to venture into residential areas in search of drinking water and food.Natural water resources in the state have been adversely affected by scorching heat and rising humidity.Lakes are under immense pressure due to haphazard dumping of garbage, including solid waste and plastic, and the discharge of untreated sewage.A lowering water table and seawater intrusion in coastal areas are further intensifying the water crisis in Goa. At the same time, unregularised construction and concreting work are adding to the problem.Sanket Naik from Sal, Bicholim, who conducts nature trails and birdwatching activities for students, said that at many places across the state, birds are finding it difficult to access drinking water. Threatened freshwater aquifers are forcing birds into residential areas in search of water and food.He added that there is a need to create shallow drinking and bathing spots to help birds avoid dehydration and maintain their feathers.
