Unwanted ranking

Ten cities - Delhi, Indore, Jabalpur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Bhopal, Mallapuram, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Kochi - accounted for almost 46.4% of
the total road accidents in India in 2021 and 2022.

Among the worst 10 cities, only Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai were categorized as metros, with Mumbai ranked 14th and Kolkata 38th. Cities such as Kanpur, Allahabad, Lucknow, Indore, Jaipur, and Raipur rounded off the list, emphasizing the need for improved traffic management and enforcement of rules.

Primary causes

Road conditions, human error, and vehicle conditions were identified as the primary causes of these accidents, with human error encompassing speeding, drunk driving, violating traffic signals, and using mobile phones while driving.

Speeding-related incidents

The proportion of speeding-related incidents contributing to road fatalities has risen from 64% in 2018 to 71% in 2022, indicating the critical need for stringent enforcement, especially amidst the government's focus on improving road infrastructure.

National and State highways accounted for 60% of the total deaths, despite comprising only 5% of the road network.

Rule violations​


Traffic rule violations, such as drunk driving and red light jumping, increased notably, with red light violation fatalities more than doubling from 679 in 2021 to 1,462 in 2022.

Pothole-related fatalities


Despite assurances of improved road conditions, the surge in pothole-related fatalities by 25% to 1,856 deaths in 2022 highlights the persistent danger of inadequate infrastructure maintenance and its lethal consequences for road users.

​Collisions between vehicles

In 2022, the number of fatalities resulting from collisions between moving vehicles and stationary or parked objects climbed to 6,012, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures and better traffic management strategies.
