Two snatchers arrested in New Chandigarh, gold chain recovered
Mohali: Two history-sheeters wanted in a gold chain snatching case were arrested by the Mullanpur police and the Mohali operation cell after fracturing their legs while trying to evade arrest. The joint police team recovered the stolen gold chain and the motorcycle used in the crime.
The arrested accused have been identified as Suraj, alias Lamba, a resident of Ganesh Vihar, Dera Bassi, and Rustam, a resident of Palsora, Chandigarh. The arrests were made on Saturday following a district-wide crackdown on snatchers.
The arrest traces back to an FIR dated May 18, 2026, based on a complaint filed by Nitasha Kondal, a resident of Eco City, Sector 6-A, New Chandigarh. Kondal stated that on May 16, two motorcycle-borne men snatched her gold chain and fled the spot.
During the subsequent raid, cops cornered the suspects. Police recovered the snatched gold chain along with the black Hero Splendor motorcycle (HR-03-AE-0259) used during the crime.
Police records reveal that both accused have a history of criminal activities. Suraj already faces a burglary and theft case registered under Sections 457, 380, and 411 of the IPC at the Phase-1 police station in Mohali from April 2024. He is also booked in another criminal case registered at the same police station in October 2024.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain if the duo is involved in other criminal activities across the Tricity.
