‘Total surrender’: Farmers slam Indo-US trade deal
Bathinda: Responding to reports about inclusion of agriculture and allied sector in the Indo-US trade deal, farmer organisation BKU (Ekta Sidhupur) on Thursday termed the alleged move a "total surrender" by the Centre, and burnt effigies of US President Donald Trump across Punjab to register their protest."This deal acts as a death warrant for small farmers lacking capacity to compete with farmers from the US enjoying massive subsidies," said members of the farmer body. They submitted memorandums to district officials addressed to the President, demanding that the deal remain unsigned. BKU (Ekta Sidhupur) warned that the deal allowing Indian markets to be flooded by highly subsidised US agricultural products would devastate crores of small and middle farmers' households in India. "The US has only 18.8 lakh farmers as per a 2024 survey as compared to 14.65 crore operational holdings in India according to the agricultural census of 2015," said farmers. MSID:: 131504955 413 |
