BENGALURU: Women legislators in Congress are seek-ing at least two ministerial berths in the new govt, in-sisting women are under-represented since the out-going govt had only Laxmi Hebbalkar in the cabinet despite the party having five women MLAs.The demand comes amid renewed national discus-sions on women's repre-sentation and gains signifi-cance given Karnataka's poor record in this regard. Hebbalkar said: "Given the debate over 33% reser-vation, this is the right time for more representation for women. The party high com-mand definitely will induct more than two." Hebbalkar dismissed speculation that she was seeking the deputy chief minister's post. While Congress sup-ported the Women's Reser-vation Act passed in 2023, it recently opposed the NDA govt's Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which linked reservation to delimitation and expansion of Lok Sabha seats. 2026, Motamma, Nayana Mudigere MLA, said in creased representation will strengthen the party's com-mitment to women's em-powerment. "Such a move will reflect well on the party," she said. M Roopakala Shashidhar, KGF MLA, and Gulbarga North's Kaneez Fathima, who are both strong contend-ers for cabinet berths, also backed greater opportunities for women functionaries. Fathima admitted that she had thrown her hat in the ring for a cabinet berth.
