Tyre care guide: Easy tips to increase tyre life on Indian roads
Tyres are among the most important parts of any vehicle, yet they are often the most neglected. On Indian roads, where rough surfaces, heat and unpredictable traffic conditions are common, tyres go through far more stress than you think. The good news is that a few simple maintenance habits can significantly improve tyre life, save money and even make driving safer.
One of the most important things vehicle owners should do is regularly check tyre pressure.
Under-inflated tyres wear out faster, reduce fuel efficiency and affect handling, while over-inflated tyres can lead to uneven wear and a harsher ride quality. Try to check tyre pressure at least once a week and always when the tyres are cold. Drivers should follow the pressure figures mentioned in the owner’s manual.Indian weather conditions also play a major role in tyre wear.
Tyre pressure changes with temperature fluctuations, which means tyres that are correctly inflated in the morning may become over-inflated later in the day during peak summer heat in cities such as Delhi, Chennai or Nagpur.Wheel alignment and balancing are equally important for extending tyre life.
Poor roads and potholes can easily disturb wheel alignment, causing uneven tyre wear. If the steering feels slightly off-centre or the car pulls to one side, it may be time for an alignment check.Driving habits also have a direct impact on tyre life.
Aggressive acceleration, sudden braking and fast cornering wear down tread much faster. Indian roads, especially in cities, often force drivers into stop-and-go traffic situations, but smoother driving inputs can still make a noticeable difference.Tyre sidewalls deserve special attention as well.
While most people focus only on tread wear, sidewalls are highly vulnerable to cuts, cracks and bulges caused by potholes and high kerbs. A quick visual inspection once every week can help identify such problems early.Extreme summer heat is another hidden enemy for tyres in India.
High road temperatures accelerate rubber degradation and increase the chances of a blowout during long highway drives. Parking in shaded areas whenever possible and taking breaks during extended journeys can help tyres cool down and reduce stress.Comments
