Early life

Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, and grew up in the nearby community of Archery. He was the son of James Earl Carter, Sr., a farmer and businessman, and Lillian Gordy Carter, a registered nurse.(Image credit: National Park Service website)

Naval career

He served as a submariner in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, and worked in the nuclear submarine program under Admiral Hyman Rickover.

Foreign and domestic policies

As president, Carter achieved significant foreign policy successes, including the Camp David Accords, the SALT II treaty, the Panama Canal treaties, and the establishment of diplomatic relations with China.
