Citigroup's "Project Bora Bora" to result in 10% workforce reduction
Citigroup, under the leadership of CEO Jane Fraser, is moving forward with its sweeping reorganization plan, codenamed "Project Bora Bora." This restructuring aims to simplify the bank's operations and boost its stock price, but it comes with the prospect of significant job cuts. While Citigroup had previously hinted at layoffs, it is now being reported that the bank's managers and consultants have discussed reducing the workforce by at least 10% in several major businesses. These discussions are still in the early stages, and the final number of job cuts could change.
Citigroup, with a global headcount of 240,000 employees, is feeling the pressure to address its long-standing challenges. Despite Jane Fraser's efforts to improve the bank's profitability and streamline its operations, Citigroup's stock performance continues to lag behind its peers. The bank currently trades at a price-to-tangible book value ratio of 0.49, significantly lower than its U.S. competitors and top-performing banks like JPMorgan Chase.
Analysts have pointed out that a substantial reduction in headcount may be the key to Citigroup's recovery. The pressure is on CEO Jane Fraser to make significant changes and deliver on her commitment to boosting the bank's returns to at least 11% in the coming years. To achieve this goal, Citigroup needs to increase revenue, use its balance sheet more efficiently, and reduce costs. While revenue growth may be challenging, expense cuts are seen as a critical lever to achieve this target.
The update on Citigroup's restructuring plan and its financial impact is expected to be revealed in January when the bank reports its fourth-quarter earnings. The stakes are high for Citigroup, which has underperformed for decades, and its ability to meet its return targets will play a crucial role in determining the bank's future direction. Failure to achieve these goals could lead to renewed calls for more drastic actions, including potentially dismantling the company.
