An anonymous San Francisco tech worker gave $1.6 million to SFUSD, and all 6,000 teachers each received a $250 gift card

An anonymous San Francisco resident with a background in tech has made a donation worth $1.6 million to give every teacher and paraeducator in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) a gift card of $250, to honour educators’ work.The donation, announced by Spark SF Public Schools, the official public foundation of the SFUSD, will benefit roughly 6,000 teachers and paraeducators across the district. Spark SF Public Schools revealed that the recipient will be able to access the money through a digital Visa gift card.Donation aimed at recognising educatorsAs mentioned by Spark SF Public Schools, the donor said that they wanted educators to feel that they were “seen and appreciated” for the efforts they make. The foundation added that the contribution was meant to recognise both teachers and paraeducators for their dedication to their students.In her statement issued via Spark, Ginny Fang, the President of the organisation, said that the contribution is a recognition of the role educators play in the lives of students and in San Francisco."This generous gift is a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for our educators, whose impact on students and our city is immeasurable," Fang said.The foundation added that this comes at a time when schools are facing staffing, budget and classroom pressures.Thousands of educators to benefitAs per Spark and various news outlets from the region, approximately 6,000 educators from within the district have been selected for the surprise gift. In this regard, the organisation has said that all those who are eligible for the gift card will be sent details by email regarding its acquisition.Furthermore, the foundation has released a special information page about the campaign on their website, where it is made clear that the gift has been arranged for them by an anonymous donor from San Francisco.Reportedly, some educators had concerns about the authenticity of emails about the gift due to its unusual nature. However, the foundation later confirmed that the gift programme was legitimate and assisted with its distribution. Comes after the recent labour disputeThis move comes at a time when there have been some labour issues in SFUSD. The donation comes just months after labour negotiations between the district and educators drew public attention.The union officials had asked for raises and enhanced healthcare packages while negotiating. The union and district later reached a tentative agreement between the district officials and the union representatives of the educators.Although the donation is not connected to those negotiations and does not affect salaries, its timing has drawn attention.Teachers' union welcomes gestureThe teachers' union in the district, United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), expressed appreciation for the donation.According to Spark's press release, UESF president Cassondra Curiel said educators repeatedly exhibit dedication and caring towards their students, sometimes even going above and beyond what is expected from them. Curiel said that the donation is an important gesture, and it recognises the important contributions of educators in shaping the lives of the youth of San Francisco.The donor has chosen to remain anonymous.
