Mexico's day of remembrance

Mexicans observe 'Day of the Dead' to pay tribute to the departed and extend an invitation for them to return temporarily to the world of the living. While it is predominantly a Mexican custom, several other countries have adopted the practice of commemorating the deceased.

While it is traditionally celebrated on November 1-2, the preparations and the festivities commence at the end of October, with each day devoted to honoring different types of deaths.

Roots of Mexican tradition

Although the origins of this tradition are a subject of debate, it has evolved into a symbol of Mexican culture in recent years. In 2008, UNESCO recognized its significance by adding the tradition to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Celebrations for the lives lost

Mexicans do not grieve for their departed loved ones on this day; rather, they view it as a festive occasion to joyfully commemorate, pay their respects and recollect memories and humorous anecdotes of those who have passed away.

Altars for the ancestors

Individuals present the favorite food to the dead and construct altars, ranging from 3 to 10 levels. Three levels may symbolize heaven, earth, and purgatory, while seven levels may represent the seven steps to the afterlife or the seven deadly sins.

Symbolic Colors and flowers of the Altars

The altar showcases various colors: black symbolizing the underworld, purple for Catholic faith, red denoting warriors, and white signifying children. The common thread is the marigold flower, believed to serve as a guiding light and has a scent to attract the souls.

Catrinas Parade to celebrate tradition

Mexicans participated in the Catrinas Parade, a vibrant display of skeleton figures moving through Mexico City to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Elaborate processions were held throughout the country which featured individuals with skull-painted faces or those dressed as skeletons.
