NEW DELHI: Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed to have thwarted a terrorist plot orchestrated by a man allegedly recruited by Ukraine. The FSB stated that the individual aimed to carry out attacks on military installations and energy facilities within Russian territory.
According to reports from state media, the FSB disclosed that the thwarted attacks included plans to target defense ministry facilities in the Moscow region and to assault members of a volunteer battalion and center in Saint Petersburg.

The operation culminated in a confrontation captured on drone footage in the Leningrad region, close to Saint Petersburg. The video depicted armed FSB agents engaging in a firefight with the suspect, who sought refuge in a concrete bunker. Subsequently, the man was found deceased inside the bunker, with a pistol nearby.
Identified as a Russian citizen born in 1976, the individual had purportedly been recruited by Ukraine's GUR military intelligence unit. The FSB previously attempted to detain him in the Moscow region, leading to his escape and the abandonment of incriminating items, including weapons and bomb-making equipment.
Allegations suggest that the suspect intended to target a fuel depot in the Leningrad region as part of the planned attacks. This incident underscores the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides accusing each other of engaging in clandestine operations.
Ukraine has been implicated in various attacks targeting supporters of Moscow's military offensive, including fatal bombings and assassinations. Recent events, including the sentencing of an activist for acts of arson and vandalism, underscore the volatile atmosphere prevalent in Russia amid ongoing protests against the conflict in Ukraine and military mobilization efforts.
The incident highlights the precarious security situation in the region and the continued threat posed by individuals seeking to destabilize the fragile peace. As tensions persist, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to thwart potential threats and maintain order amidst the geopolitical turmoil.
