Pope Francis passes away

The Pope passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, according to a statement from the Vatican.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born to Italian immigrant parents on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

​Appointed as Jesuit Provincial of Argentina (1973–1979)​

​Leads the Jesuits during a politically volatile time, forming his views on courage, discretion, and service.​

​Becomes Archbishop of Buenos Aires (1998)​

​On February 28, 1998 he became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. He emerged as a powerful voice for the marginalized and a model of pastoral leadership.

​ Elected as Pope (2013)​

On March 13, 2013 he became Pope Francis, the first Jesuit, the first Latin American, and the first pope named after St. Francis of Assisi.
