River Danube bursts its banks

Budapest experienced the River Danube overflowing as water levels reached their highest point in ten years. This was a result of heavy rainfall and snow, followed by mild weather, leading to unusually early winter floods. (AFP photo)

Record water levels in a decade

The General Directorate for Water Management in Hungary said that the Danube reached its peak at 6.93 meters late on December 27. This level is lower than the 8.91 meters recorded in 2013, when Central Europe experienced severe flooding following heavy rains in late May. (AFP photo)

Climate change threat

Although the current Danube flooding in Budapest has not resulted in significant damage this year, experts have warned that the increasing frequency of early floods could be attributed to climate change. (AFP photo)

Danube flooding history

According to the water authority, the Danube's water level surpassing 6 meters in the month of December hasn't occurred since 1987. However, during that time, it did not lead to flooding on the embankment roads. (AFP photo)

Predicted Shift in Floods

"Thus we can assume that in the future the floods caused by snow melting that used to occur in the spring could happen earlier, possibly during the winter months," said climate researcher Anna Kis. (AFP photo)

'Trend of rising winter precipitation'

Climate researcher Anna Kis, affiliated with the "1.5 degrees" climate project, said that when considering the broader perspective, there is a noticeable trend of rising winter precipitation. With temperatures on the rise, there is a likelihood of reduced snowfall and earlier melting, contributing to the heightened risk of early floods. (AFP photo)

Memories of Frozen Danube

Miklos, a local resident, reminisced, "I recall significant floods, but never in December. During December, the Danube used to freeze. I have memories from my youth when the ice around the Chain Bridge had to be shattered with explosions."
