'Squid Game' character deaths that broke our hearts - From Seong Gi-Hun to Ali Abdul

Squid Game, the series that engulfed the audience in cinematic excellence, made an indelible impression. The world might have been a hoax, but everything felt real due to the resilient characters, tumultuous twists, and compelling circumstances. As fans cheered for the wins of their favorites at the games, they also mourned the unfortunate losses. While the wicked characters were overlooked, there were other dear ones whose gut-churning deaths cannot be forgotten. Let’s take a look at the demise of the characters that broke our hearts.

2/7

Kang Sae-Byeok

Kang Sae-Byeok was the ‘cool girl’ from the team, who instantly won hearts for her ‘don’t care’ attitude. Her ways might have been wrong (or illegal), but her wish to reunite with her brother after escaping North Korea connected the heartbreaking dots. Player 067, who was one of three finalists, had been severely injured by the glass during the game. Turns out, Cho Sang-Woo stabbed her to death while she was distressed. The unexpected demise of Kang Sae-Byeok left a mark on the hearts, as she couldn’t meet her family even after fighting for her life in many games.

3/7

Seong Gi-Hun

The moment where jaws dropped and faith in humanity was reinstated – the demise of Seong Gi-Hun. He had joined the games for the second time to help others escape the death palace, but taught a lesson to the elites by not comparing humans to horses. When he falls from the platform, the heartbeats stop, and the baby wins the ultimate finale. The sacrifice was not just a moment in the game, but an unattainable thought, proving that he is stronger than ever.

4/7

Kim Jun-Hee

Another sacrifice that grazed the hearts was that of Kim Jun-Hee, who could not continue the game and jumped off a platform. Her backstory of the unfortunate circumstances and irresponsible partner made viewers sympathize with her. As she gave birth to the baby in the middle of the competitions, her health, especially her legs, made it impossible to play jumping rope with the speed that kept increasing. While she asked Seong Gi-Hun to take care of her daughter, the death not only impacted the course of the game, but also the fans.

5/7

Ali Abdul

One of the characters who was too naive for the game, Ali Abdul, won the hearts of the viewers. However, he made several mistakes, and the most significant was to ever trust Cho Sang-Woo with his life. Throughout the season, Abdul played accurately and tried to make a genuine friendship. During the game of marbles, the cold-hearted opponent simply betrayed him at the end, leading to the player being shot.

6/7

Park Jung-Bae

The man who died because of his friendship, Park Jung-Bae, followed the ‘together pact’ even in crisis. When the players rebelled against the Front Man and his team, the player tagged along with his friend and the leader, Seong Gi-Hun. As they couldn’t escape the wrath, he became the prey and was shot in front of his friend, punishing Gi-Hun for his unlawful actions.

7/7

Thanos and The Recruiter

While the characters had a comparatively shorter time than the aforementioned characters, Thanos and the Recruiter didn’t forget to win the hearts. Thanos became a fan-favorite for his quirkiness and his devil-may-care attitude (even in the games). As for The Recruiter, he was witty, smart, and knew how to twist the evil decree into a human’s psychological play. The player died in the fight, but his necklace was loved by others. Meanwhile, the Recruiter’s death was no less than iconic, after he was shot in Russian Roulette. While hearts may not have been broken after the loss, they were missed in the further episodes, leaving pieces of their personalities and memories.
