On February 6, 1819, Singapore city was founded by Sir Thomas Raffles as a British colony. Raffles found a Malay settlement near the Singapore River, headed by a governor for the Sultan of Johor. The governor moved to Singapore from Johor in 1811 with Malay people when Raffles arrived. The incumbent Sultan of Johor - Tengku Abdul Rahman was controlled by Dutch and the Bugis. So, with the governor's help, Raffles smuggled Tengku Hussein (Rahman’s older brother) to Singapore who was away in Pahang getting married. By offering a yearly payment of 5000 Spanish dollars to Hussein and 3000 Spanish dollars to the governor, British East India Company established a trading post in Singapore. This agreement was ratified with a formal treaty signed on February 6th, 1819.
