Gujarat Vidyapith asks 60 staff members on contract to vacate residential quarters
Gujarat Vidyapith, set up by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, has issued eviction notices to more than 60 contractual non-teaching staff members and 3 Vankar families to vacate their residential quarters on the university campus by May 31. The University cited that the Gujarat Vidyapith cannot provide accommodation to contractual staff members. Vice Chancellor Prof Joshi stated that some of the contractual employees went to the court but the court also passed the judgement that the accommodation cannot be provided to the contractual workers. Kusum ben Parmar, a contractual worker from the Vankar family said, I am Employed at Vidyapith and we have been living in this house from last 3 generations. I have been working here from last 17 years and have not been made permanent also. They are now asking us to vacate the house. Where will we go? We don’t have money to buy our own house.”
