Veena Sikri, former High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, spoke on the rise of anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh, explaining that it was often politically motivated, with opposition parties blaming India for domestic issues. She recalled that under the BNP government, insurgent groups in northeast India found support in Bangladesh, creating security challenges. However, Sheikh Hasina, after taking office in 2009, respected India’s security red lines, ensuring 15 years of peace and development in the northeast. Sikri said India’s approach has been consistent, offering cooperation and dialogue, but progress depends on Bangladesh’s willingness. She noted ongoing concerns like insurgency, border security, and Pakistan-China influence. Despite these challenges, the Bangladeshi public appears in favor of stronger India-Bangladesh relations, seeking renewed economic, cultural, and people-to-people engagement.
