RANCHI: The announcement of the expansion of private FM radio services in the Union Budget has come as a welcome surprise to the youth of the state. Union finance minister P Chidambaram, in his budget speech, proposed that all cities with a population of 1 lakh will be covered by FM channels. Chidambaram said about 839 new FM radio channels will be auctioned in 2013-14 and, after the auction, all cities having a population of more than 1,00,000 will be covered by private FM radio services.

Nikita Navya, a student of DPS Bokaro, said, "Bokaro is an industrial hub and the educational capital of the state. We miss the new age FM channels here." Apart from Ranchi and Jamshedpur, no other city has private FM channels in the state. The Union information and broadcasting ministry has its stations in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Chaibasa, Hazaribagh and Daltonganj.
The FM of the All India Radio (AIR) is also not available in certain parts of the state. "We receive complaints about the non-availability or poor availability of our FM from certain parts of the state," said D C.
