Varsha HK aka Anu from the recently launched daily soap Prema Entha Madhuram has become everyone’s dream date of sorts currently or at least the internet would like you to believe so.

The show which deals with the unconventional love story of a 40-year-old businessman and his 19-year-old muse has made it into the list of top 5 shows on the TRP charts recently. On the occasion, the young actress, who has hogged the limelight with the Kannada shows Kasthuri Nivasa and Nagamandala, talks to ETimes TV about her Telugu TV debut and much more.

We have to manage until the lockdown is over

I’m currently in Bangalore with family. Our previous schedule was called off. We have to manage until the lockdown is over.

I was initially homesick

I was initially homesick but I don’t find any difference now. Everybody on the sets and from the channel make me feel comfortable. I’ve started learning to learn Telugu now. I ensure everyone talks to me Telugu.

She helped me understand Telugu TV industry better

Meghna Lokesh (TV actress) is like a sister to me. Right from my first day in the (Telugu TV) industry for ‘Prema Entha Madhuram’, I’m with Meghna akka only. She has been a great company making me feel at home and she helped me understand better how the industry functions and everything around.

Many actors here are from Karnataka; it made me feel good

I was told that Telugu TV industry has many actors from Karnataka but it was on the sets of Padi Padi Leche Manasu, the Valentine’s Day special event, I had realised this fact show. When I was in the gallery, I heard everybody around was talking in Kannada. I was surprised; it actually made me feel good and comfortable.

Acting is subtler here

Right from making to compositions, I find both Kannada and Telugu TV industries take great attention to the detail. When comes to acting, we get to be subtler with expressions here. Especially, I find sad or pathos expressions here on the subtler side.

I’m 19 just like ‘Anu’

(Laughs) Let me tell you, I’m 19. This December I’ll turn 20. I’m just playing my age and I’m the youngest on the sets, too. But I haven’t seriously given it a thought. To me, it is all about getting the scene right.

3 differences between me and Anu…

- I don’t believe things or people as quickly as Anu (in Prema Entha Mandhuram) would do.

- And Varsha is more outspoken and talkative (laughs).

- Also, Anu is a bit more traditional than Varsha is. But loving parents and taking care of them is one quality Varsha shares with Anu.

I had to work on myself a lot

I played some loud and full of fun characters in my Kannada shows. Even as a person, I talk and laugh more. I had to control all of that and work on being subtler as much as I can for this role of ‘Anu’ in Prema Entha Madhuram.

I’m learning a lot from Sriram sir

I’m really glad to be working with someone like Sriram sir (Sriram Venkat). Though I’m the youngest on the set, he makes me feel so comfortable. I keep learning from him every single day. And I’ve a great time with Padma Amma (Bangalore Padma, who plays Anu’s mother in the show) on the sets. Since she is also from Bengaluru, we have some girl talk in Kannada (laughs).

My family and neighbours watch PEM and Jothe Jotheyalli; they feel we are much younger

My family and neighbours are now watching Prema Entha Madhuram. They watch Jothe Jotheyalli (Kannada version of the same show), too, yet they are not bored. But they feel we (lead actors Varsha and Sriram Venkat) are much younger to the Kannada lead pair Prem and Ramya.

About rumours on quitting Kasthuri Nivasa for PEM

When I was selected for Prema Entha Madhuram, I was prepping up to manage my Kannada show Kasthuri Nivasa and this as well. But the call sheets couldn’t be adjusted and at the end of the day, I had to move on. I’ve signed a contract that I can’t take up new shows in Kannada but I can explore in other languages. I’m not on a signing spree, too. To me, the quality of work matters, too.
